Raat Akeli Hai Review | Netflix India

Raat Akeli Hai is simply outstanding. Honey Trehan’s directorial debut is a crime thriller that will mysteriously mesmerize you from start to end. The screenplay flows regardless of the 2,5 Hour run time with fine performances by a great star cast who manages to keep you engaged throughout.

The whole idea of women being treated as commodities has been targeted by director Honey Trehan. He has also questioned how people at certain positions abuse the power they have for their own whims and fancies. It was a refreshing sight to see Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Inspector Jatil Yadav who is fearless yet troubled by the insecurities of the layman. His equation with mother, effortlessly played by Ila Arun, highlights the normal and relatable life of an Indian Policeman. It is about body language, dialogue delivery, and his acting rather than the larger than life glorification of your Dabangg or Singham cop-films.

The screenplay begins with him being sent to investigate the murder of a rich guy and he immediately senses that the family members a hiding something as they all have reasons to kill. This is when we are introduced to this magnificent star cast of the movie including the talented Radhika Apte. Radhika or call her the ‘star of Netflix’ is back to entertain you and show you a character, Radha, that we need to celebrate. She is stubborn and a mysterious character but you will understand it’s her situation that made her act in that manner. The chemistry between Nawaz and Radhika is spectacular. Nawaz’s act is one of a kind and effortless Radhika blends beautifully into her character and delivers a great performance.

Honey Trehan who is an experienced casting director has chosen a fine line up of fine actors including Tigmanshu Dhulia, Shweta Tripathi, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Nishant Dahiya, Ila Arun, Swanand Kirkire and Aditya Srivastava. It was a treat to see such talent coming together and also, played their roles with complete honesty.

The darkness referred to in the title is felt throughout the movie. The visuals, the twists all of it has this dark tonality that only brightens up the narration. There are no dull moments till the climax. Raat Akeli Hai is a genuine thriller that deserves great admiration and recognition. If you are someone who enjoys artistic cinema that forces you to think, you would love this gem!
