Jhund Review

The movie “Jhund” revolves around a group of slum dwellers led by a retired college professor named Vijay (played by Amitabh Bachchan), who introduces them to football. The film delves into their challenges as society struggles to treat them with dignity and respect. Director Nagraj Manjule explores not only sports but also societal issues, giving a voice to the marginalized.

Nagraj Manjule’s “Jhund” is not just a sports drama; it goes beyond the typical formula of sports films. Set in Nagpur, the movie sheds light on the lives of slum residents amidst a backdrop of opulent duplexes and a prestigious college. The film portrays the harsh realities faced by the slum children, depicting their struggles with crime and lack of opportunities. The story follows their transformation under Vijay’s guidance, emphasizing the process of growth rather than just the end result.

Manjule uses the film to convey his thoughts on various societal and political issues, boldly addressing issues like identity struggles, religious conflicts, and discrimination. The film’s striking visuals portray the stark contrast between different social classes. The music, especially the title track by Ajay-Atul, complements the narrative effectively.

Amitabh Bachchan’s performance is remarkable as he plays a supporting yet pivotal role, allowing the director’s vision to take centre stage. Despite a slightly shaky start in the second half, “Jhund” maintains its grip on the audience, inviting them to engage with its thought-provoking themes. “Jhund” skillfully redefines the sports genre by infusing it with heart, empathy, and authenticity. It’s a film that demands attention and is worth watching.
