Pinga: An authentic taste of Lavani ~ A Maharashtrian folk dance

After the exquisite launch of Deewani Mastani from the much anticipated Bajirao Mastani. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has now released a Marathi Lavani Folk Dance to the track Pinga which depicts the films leading actresses Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra dressed in traditional Lavani attire consisting of a sari draped in a style called Navvari and form a bun (juda in Hindi or ambada in marathi) with their hair and heavy jewellery that includes necklaces, earrings, ankelts, kamarpatta (a belt at the waist) with colourful bangles and a nose ring with a dot.

The distinction between PINGA by Priyanka-Deepika in Bajirao Mastani & DOLA RE by Aishwarya-Madhuri in Devdas!

Pinga is a Marathi Folk Dance performed in a movie set in Maharashtra in the 1920s during the Peshwa Rule. The folk dance performed by Priyanka-Deepika is Lavani. This is a combination of traditional song and dance, which particularly performed to the beats of Dholki, a percussion instrument. Lavani is noted for its powerful rhythm. Lavani has contributed substantially to the development of Marathi folk theatre. According to a tradition, the word Lavani is derived from the word lavanya which means beauty. Lavani can be traced back to 1560s – it came into prominence during the later days of the Peshwa rule during the 1720s. The dance choreographed by Remo D’Souza is authentically Marathi which was not diluted with the use of other dance forms. Singers: Shreya Ghoshal and Vaishali Made | Music: Sanjay Leela Bhansali | Lyrics: Siddharth Garima.

Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit are two of Bollywood’s most iconic dancers and their combination in Dola Re was an instant hit with audiences of Indian Cinema and fine Art. Devdas was a period film set in Bengal during the early 1900s. The Award-winning piece was choreographed by the legendary Saroj Khan who stated that the form of dance she explored with Dola Re, is called Nautwary. It included steps of Kathak and Bharatnatyam. It was a mix of Indian classical dance forms.

When comparing the iconic Dola Re to Pinga – one should consider that both tracks are unique and appreciate the art celebrated through each track. Pinga is part a period drama set in Maharashtra during the 1700s whereas Dola Re is set in Bengal during the 1900s. In simple terms both tracks are set in different parts of India with a 200 year gap. We should relish the exquisiteness Sanjay Leela Bhansali brings to Indian Cinema that keeps us connected to the Folk Dance forms of India through his Cinema. We are overjoyed to see two of Bollywood’s most successful and talented Actresses share screen space. Bajirao Mastani releases December 18.
