In both Hollywood and Bollywood we know of some kind of runaway bride and in every part of the world someone has a tale to tell about last moment deserters of such kind who leave their grooms at the alter! But have you ever heard of runaway the grooms? Perhaps not right … He is not forced into marriage nor is the bride scary or overbearing but she is smart, faultless and righteous and most significantly she is chosen by our groom but this ‘Shuddh Desi Confusion’ gives birth to the story of ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ a Maneesh Sharma’s directorial venture. Let’s get into this tale! We have Raghu Ram (Sushant Singh Rajput) who is a expert tourist guide and part time store salesman. Sometimes he works for Tauji’s (Rishi Kapoor) agency that takes care of wedding preparations .
On his way to his own wedding Raghu meets Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) who is part of the wedding procession as Raghu’s (hired) sister. Her façade straightaway attracts the flippant lover Raghu thus the conception of to their ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’. Raghu leaves his beautiful bride, Tara (played by debutant Vaani Kapoor) to live-in with Gayatri in Jaipur. The gracefully directed scenes and praiseworthy portrayal of their roles by Parineeti and Sushant give complexity to the portrayal of modern city romances. The lovers’ tiff, lust, love, and confusion on hot topics like marriage and commitment are shown nicely here. Adding more spice to the picture is Tauji’s character that is sensible, funny, mature, and every bit entertaining. The jilted bride Tara is not out of the picture for good as yet. So watch out for some more drama and of course, romance as the story moves on.
Maneesh Sharma’s film plays with the theme of marriage and the attitude of today’s youth in a very fresh and sleek way which makes the film a pleasant watch. Both Parineeti and Sushant have exhibited the various shades of their characters with delicacy and boldness. After seeing Sushant on TV for years and debuted in the very successful Kai Po Che and Parineeti who rocked inIshaqzaade and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl we expected this type of amazing performances. The debut actress Vaani Kapoor’s attractive visage is a gasp of fresh air in the film especially with the confidence she radiates on screen. She makes it difficult to say that this is her first film. Bollywood now has another star on the block. The music album showcases various really tuneful tracks like ‘Tere mere beech mein’ and ‘Gulaabi’ stands out. The overall feel of the soundtrack is very calming and relaxing contra to the title track which will pick up your mood on any gloomy day. The fashion in Shuddh Desi Romance is calm, very de-glam and relaxed contemporary with a glimpse of sophisticated elegance.
The director of photography Manu Anand has presented Jaipur with perfection in most of the movie and you will feel the need to visit the pink city for a romantic holiday. It is great to see more modern love stories set within the beauty of India like Raanjhana set in the exquisite Benaras and the latest super hit Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in the charming city of Udaipur. It is great to witness that the younger generation of directors don’t feel the need to set their love stories in the US or the UK but platform and portray the true beauty of India.
The latest ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ may not touch the vibrancy of ‘Band Baaja Baarat’ and ‘Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl’ which Maneesh Sharma’s has directed previously but his third directorial venture is lively, vivacious, and sparkly not forgetting bold with lots of desi flavour! If you enjoy modern day tales of love and romance-I recommend that you catch Shudd Desi Romance at a cinema near you. The film gets a justifiable 7/10 from me !
